Earthships: self-sustaining homes for a post-apocalyptic US?

Comments from the original posting of the video: http://faircompanies.com/forum/discussion/385/earthship-discussion

On the desert mesa of New Mexico, miles from the nearest town of Taos (pop. 5,700), Star-Wars-like shelters rise from the earth, half-buried and covered in adobe. Called “Earthships” – brainchild of architect Mike Reynolds in the 1970s- they’re nearly completely self-sufficient homes: no electrical grid, no water lines, no sewer.

The Greater World Earthship Community, about 70 passive solar homes built from earth and trash on 633 acres, had a rough start; they were shut down as an illegal subdivision in 1997 and it took them 7 years to come to compliance. Though today, the county fully cooperates with Reynolds and his Earthship Biotecture operation to turn trash (tires, cans, glass bottles) into shelters and has even given them 2 acres to experiment with housing in anyway they like (they also provide their recycling).

Sixteen years ago, Tom Duke had just finished over a decade on the pro volleyball circuit when he bought a bit of land here with his wife and began to build a tiny Earthship the size of a storage shed. When their first son was born they built their dream house on the property, a two bedroom that, like other Earthships, collects rainwater, uses its water four times (the plants in the indoor greenhouse filter the greywater) and even processes its own sewage.

In this video, Tom takes us on a tour of his home, his original “Earthship survival pod”, the “nest” (,000 studio apartment), the “Simple Survival Earthship” (aimed mainly at the developing world), a custom home designed to feed a family of four (including a tilapia pond in the greenhouse) and the “BMW of Earthships”, the “Global” (aimed at the typical American family).

Tiny houses’ polymath: tinker, lyrist, carpenter, cartoonist

Tiny houses’ polymath: tinker, lyrist, carpenter, cartoonist

Derek Diedricksen has loved tiny homes since he read Lester Walker’s “Tiny Tiny Houses” as a ten year old. It was the same year he built his first “non-fort tiny house” (complete with insulation, electricity, bunk beds), mowing lawns to raise the money for the two-by-fours. [ His book “Microshelters”: http://www.amazon.com/Microshelters-Creative-Cabins-Houses-Structures/dp/1612123538/ ]

Nearly three decades later and he’s still building and has turned his childhood passion into a career. He runs one of the original tiny house blogs (relaxshacks.com), has authored a graphic novel/ DIY instruction manual “Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts”, hosts tiny house building workshops (his next is Nov 22-23 in Carolina Beach, NC), builds tiny shelters/treehouses for clients and even raps about the genre (e.g. in his music video Lollipop Fort of Death).

Top 10 BEST and WORST blocks in Minecraft for Building Houses

Top 10 BEST and WORST blocks in Minecraft for Building Houses

Top 10 BEST and WORST blocks in Minecraft for Building IN MY OPINION. It’s hard to know sometimes if a minecraft block suits your house or not. But sometimes, they are so bad everyone hates them, OR SO I THOUGHT. I would like to add that the “worst” blocks are not awful everywhere, just when used for buildings. Every block has a use somewhere. These are just my favorites and least favorites.

What are your favorite blocks?

Thank you to Schottie, BotBox, Ajustme, Avux and PearlescentMoon for helping me make the house designs for each block!

I reuploaded this video as I was not pleased with the original. I redid the commentary to redirect the message i was trying to put across. I am not afraid to try again to get it right. I want every upload to be something im proud of

Colombia builds houses with blocks made of discarded plastics

Colombia builds houses with blocks made of discarded plastics

Colombian architect Oscar Mendez is building a house with blocks and cuboids made of discarded plastics.

(Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO Concepts Plastics.
“We are creating economic value from plastics that have no market. They are contaminated plastics, but now with a market after being recycled.”

The idea came from musician Fernando Llanos and was later adopted by architect Oscar Mendez, who through several years of research managed to develop bricks from processing all types of used plastics.

(Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics
“This is an initiative of triple impacts: economic impact, environmental impact and social impact.”

Now the invention has started to benefit thousands of homeless, who are having their own housed built mainly in suburbs with the special chunks.

(Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics
“The housing deficit in Latin America is tremendous. 40% percent of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America do not own a home. One in seven people in the world lives in extreme poverty. Then we want to improve this situation by offering houses.”

With wide use of the new building components, Colombia also expects to downsize contamination caused by thrown-away plastics.

(Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics
“On the environmental side, only in Bogota 6,300 tons of waste is thrown into the landfill is (each year), of which approximately 12%, or 750 tons, are plastics. Only 100 tons are recycled. We are recycling more of them to build hundreds of houses (for displace people).”

Stanford Seminar – Green Building and LEED for Homes

“Green Building and LEED for Homes” -Ann Edminster, Net Zero Energy Home Coalition

This seminar series equips students and professionals with tools to apply the engineering mindset to problems that stem from climate change, so that they may consider and evaluate possible interventional, remedial and adaptive approaches. The series focuses on discovering and exploring climate problems that seem most likely to benefit from adding the engineering mindset as solutions are considered.

Unique Houses on Sloping Ground, Hillside Homes

Unique Houses on Sloping Ground, Hillside Homes

Building a house on a sloping ground has its aesthetic advantages, but it is a complex project involving more details, complexity and additional costs compared to a house on a regular surface. However, a sloping land can be both a gift and a problem.
