Stanford engineers build an earthquake-resistant house

Twenty-five years after the Loma Prieta earthquake, a Stanford team develops inexpensive design modifications that could be incorporated into new homes. By outfitting their boxy, two-story house on sliding isolators so it skated along the trembling ground and including extra-strength walls, they created a home that could replace the need for residential earthquake insurance.

17 Self Sustaining Homes

17 Self Sustaining Homes

From The Dome Homes to The Solar House in Spain here are 17 Self Sustaining Homes. Would you live in any of these amazing homes?

#8 – The Dome Homes
The International Dome Home Co. made a building model that has multiple functions. They can be used as office buildings, as homes, small stores, almost anything you could think of. The shape is the magic key in its design. The dome shape allows the building to be structurally stable, saves energy due to better circulation, and the shape allows the outside to last longer since it dissipates the wind opposed to being gradually eroded by it. Who wouldn’t want to live in one of these, it’s like having your very own green hobbit hole!

#7 – The Orchid House
A name befitting of its shape, the Orchid house is located on a nature reserve in England. The 2400 square foot home was part of a green home building project called the Lower Mill Estate. The house, which is referred to as the most expensive green home ever sold, cost the new owner a whopping .2 million. The best feature in the house, a geothermal heating pump that claims to generate more energy than it uses.

#6 – ZeroHouse
ZeroHouse is a home that was designed to be completely self-sufficient. The house produces power through solar panels, has reservoirs to collect rainwater, and it even turns your waste into compost. Each one of these functions can be commanded through a smart device such as a phone or tablet. The makers of the ZeroHouse promise that this tricked out model is only just the beginning. You can snatch one up for yourself today for only 0,000.

#5 – The Solar House in Spain
A .7 million dollar villa is up for sale in Mallorca, Spain and the entire thing is powered by solar energy. The house is a whopping 6,450-square-feet and has five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The inside has recently been remodeled, and the previous owners updated the appliances to stainless steel. It may not be as big as some of these other green homes we’ve seen on this list but if you have that kind of cash laying around we’re sure you could at least use it as a vacation getaway, the views alone are gorgeous.

#4 – The Wyne Residence
In British Columbia, Canada ski patroller Richard Wyne designed and crafted this zero-energy home called the Richard Wyne’s Whistler home. The 2,200 square-foot house cost a little over .2 million to create but the three-story home features fiberglass windows, and fiber-cement siding to decrease heat transfers. A 600-foot solar panel array on the roof supplies the house with all the energy the family could possibly use. If those features weren’t green enough for you just know that one of the building materials used in this design is a spray foam that is made from recycled plastics and vegetable oil. If that isn’t recycling and reusing I’m not sure what is.

#3 – The Finca Bellavista Rainforest Village
The treetop community was first designed to preserve the 300 acres of rainforest in Costa Rica. The collection of tree houses runs completely off of sustainable energy and offers a recycling center, a hydroelectric turbine system that gives power to the members of the community, a community garden, and even internet with wifi can be found at the bottom of the trees. What is the best way to get from tree to tree other than swinging on a vine like George of the jungle, zip lines, and this community is outfitted with a network of them dubbed the “Sky Trail.”

#2 – The Yannell Residence
The Yannell residence was designed for Michael Yannell by Farr Associates and Goldberg General Contracting. The single family home is 2,675-square-feet and is located in Chicago, Illinois. The home cost .6 million to build but seems worth it since it produces 40% more energy than it consumes. That being the case, the house scored higher than any other LEED-certified green housing project in history.

#1 – A Home on Bird Island
Bird Island is an urban renewal project being designed by Graft Lab Architects for the YTL Green Home Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The home is made from sustainably-sourced silicone glass fabric which makes it a zero energy home. The unique flexibility allows the structure to bend and sway with the wind just like a treetop. Even though there was a total of six green home structures built on Bird Island for the competition we still think that the design of this model beats all.

Sacrifice the beating hearts of your enemies on the blood-soiled altars of your god to seize true power and glory. Summon the colossal avatar of your god and see them lay waste to your enemies and their homes.

Just remember: in this brutal land of vengeful gods, bloodthirsty cannibals, and vicious monsters, survival is more than tracking down food and water. Explore mysterious ruins in search of treasure and knowledge, but beware the risk of your mind being corrupted by the dark forces of the world. Traverse vast sand dunes and seek shelter from scouring sandstorms sweeping across the burning sands. March into war against your enemies and unleash your savage fury in brutal combat. Building a Big Easy superhero shotgun home: it twists & floats

Building a Big Easy superhero shotgun home: it twists & floats

Tulane architecture professor Ammar Eloueini moved to New Orleans shortly before Hurricane Katrina damaged much of the city. Inspired to build something strong enough to withstand 180-mile-per-hour winds and heavy flooding, he designed a futuristic shotgun-style home that uses geometry to stay afloat.

On a typically narrow New Orleans lot (30 feet wide), Eloueini’s J House reworks the long, narrow “shotgun shack” typology by relying on two steel “tubes” interwoven to lift the home 10 feet above ground while providing support with a minimal footprint. The twisting structure culminates on top in a 50-foot-long snake-like skylight which provides plenty of natural light for an all-white interior.

After five years of construction (he built when he had the funds), Eloueini has nearly completed one of the most stunningly unique homes we have ever visited. From the outside, the massive, twisting, charred wood exterior appears fit for a superhero. Walk inside up the floating white staircase and into the elevated home and space appears to twist and move around you.

“I was always fascinated by designers who designed something as if you took away from them all the knowledge of what that object is supposed to look like. As if they have a totally fresh eye on a house”. Eloueini who was born in Beirut, raised in Paris and now works in both Europe and the US, believes that architecture should reflect our location. “It’s to respond to the way we live today, pushing the ideas of what is a house today in this climate, in the materials we have.”

10 Insane Celebrity Homes

10 Insane Celebrity Homes

If you had millions of dollars what would you build and create the most amazing house ever? Here are 10 Insane Celebrity Homes.

4. Howard Stern

Two hundred thousand for hurricane shutters? Ten million on renovations alone? No problem for the most successful radio personality of all time. Stern reportedly spent 52 million dollars to purchase this insane mansion in Palm Beach, Florida in early 2013 and had those refurbishments done early in 2016. The specialty shutters weren’t cheap and so as you might guess, they are very heavy duty and able to withstand winds and debris impact of up to 276 miles per hour. They are also remote controlled and cover every one of the houses many windows. The home itself is even more remarkable. The mansion boasts twelve and a half bathrooms, in case the first twelve are taken, five bedrooms and sprawls over nineteen thousand feet across the Florida beach front.

3. Dwyane Wade+Gabby Union

Dwyane Wade is a star guard for the Chicago Bulls. Gabrielle Union is a very well known actress. The couple is, by all accounts very happy together and with salaries that can afford them cribs like this who could blame them? The ecstatic couple got married on August 30, 2014, and leased this ridiculous castle for the occasion. The house was priced at 10.9 million dollars before it was delisted shortly before the wedding. The property was built by architect Charles Sieger, for himself and includes a giant, landlocked moat and formal gardens that surround the property.

2. Bill Gates

Though the richest man in the world is known as a charitable man who spends his money frugally, he opened his wallet a little bit to build his dream home. The home cost a record-setting sixty-three million dollars to build and took seven years to complete. The property lies in the hills of Medina, Washington and is surrounded by nature. The estate has a variety of garages, including an underground cave that can hold ten cars, six kitchens tended by a twenty-four-hour on-call chef, a fifteen hundred square foot theater, a twenty-one hundred square foot private library and a massive aquarium. This home is incredible, but of course, it’s not the only property the billionaire owns on the west coast. He also bought a ranch in California for eighteen million dollars that has a private race track.

1. Mukesh Ambani

Ambani is no celebrity; he’s the Chairman of Reliance Industries, a gigantic conglomerate holding company in India. But he is a billionaire and had this crazy pad built in South Mumbai that is valued at around one billion dollars, making it the most expensive private residential property on the planet. The 27 story property, called Antilia, and its unique design have been a part of the Mumbai skyline since being completed in 2010. The extravagant home’s location in a destitute area of Mumbai is extremely controversial. The property has six floors of underground parking, three helipads and a total interior space of over four hundred thousand square feet. The crib also features nine high-speed elevators, a two story health center and six floors for Ambani and his family. An entire floor is dedicated to servicing Ambani’s stable of cars.
